What are Heat Pumps? Heat pumps come in two varities - ground source and air sourced. We only do air sourced heat pumps (ASHP). You can find out a lot more from the Energy Saving Trust. EST are an independent trust that provides advice on energy saving and renewable technology. You can learn more here. Air source heat pumps absorb heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat radiators, underfloor heating systems, or warm air convectors and hot water in your home. An air source heat pump extracts heat from the outside air in the same way that a fridge extracts heat from its inside. It can get heat from the air even when the temperature is as low as -15° C. Heat pumps have some impact on the environment as they need electricity to run, but the heat they extract from the ground, air, or water is constantly being renewed naturally. They need electricity to run; but for every unit of electricity used a pump can extract 3 or 4 units of heat from the outside air. If you use oil or electricity to heat your home then you should consider installing a heat pump. They will save you money and produced less greenhouse gas emissions. What is the Renewable Heat Initiative? The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a UK Government scheme set up to encourage uptake of renewable heat technologies amongst householders, communities and businesses through financial incentives. It is the first of its kind in the world and the UK Government expects the RHI to contribute towards the 2020 ambition of 12% of heating coming from renewable sources.
